Boldly Go

I think Star Trek fans get a bad rep...and I'm not just saying this cause I'm married to one. I've developed a rather shaky working knowledge of Star Trek in the eight years I've known my Martin, and for a lot of "cool" people I know, they view Star Trek as an abyssmal sesspool of nerddom. I have to step up to the plate (oooh, mixing a sports metaphor with sci-fi--that's tricky at best) and defend the Trekkies in my life.

Star Trek is not bad. Sure some people may take it way too far, but the same could be said for raving lunatic fans of things I love, like Twilight and Harry Potter. Star Trek is a show that preaches peace in times of war, tolerance in times of ignorance, and hope in times of lost faith. These are all things we need to learn from in our present times. Star Trek, once you get through all the sci-fi and regeneration upon regeneration of shows, is just trying to teach humankind a lesson of how we should all act, no matter what race, creed, or being we are.

The new movie was absolutely wonderful. It was too much fun, and I would even go back to the cineplex to pay for it again. Don't be so close-minded when it comes to the Trek: give the new movie a shot, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. As for me, I'll keep watching the classic eps with the Shat in 'em, and maybe one day I'll even dazzle my husband when my working knowledge of Star Fleet becomes more sharpened and finely tuned, so I could actually hold a conversation with him about the intricacies of Romulan vs. Vulcan war tactics (if there even is such a thing).
